Mascoma 3, Monadnock 1
When the game started, Monadnock came out hungry and looking for a win. They dominated the beginning of the game, and three minutes into the match Juliet Henderson scored, to put them up, 1-0. Mascoma began to settle in, then with six minutes to go in the half, Elizabeth Jones connected with Alyssa Hammond, to tie the game at one, and send it into halftime, 1-1.
In the second half, the game completely changed, and Mascoma took control. Two minutes in, Michaela Dowd assisted Jones, to take a 2-1 lead. Then at the 19:14 mark, Kaitlyn Pushee found Jones, for her second goal of the game. Monadnock had a chance to get back in it with just under 11 minutes to play, but a Mascoma defender made a defensive save, to keep Monadnock off the scoreboard in the second half.
Mascoma's Cinderella story will continue, as they take on top-ranked Newfound, for the State Championship, Sunday afternoon.
Newfound 5, Gilford 1
Gilford may have a better turf team than grass team, but Newfound has an even better turf team.
Newfound dominated for a majority of the game, allowing Gilford only three shots on goal, including none in the second half.
Newfound broke through with 12:46 to play in the first half, as Jasmine Peterson, connected with Julianne Marchand to take a 1-0 lead. A minute later, the Marchand sisters connected as Julianne assisted Caroline, to go up 2-0. Gilford did have their chances to take the lead first and to tie the game, but they could not put the ball in the net. Their first of two opportunities came when a ball went across the face of goal, but Laurel Gingrich missed the ball at the far post. Then less than a minute after Newfound scored their second goal, the ball had gotten by Newfound goalie, Montana Bassett, but Mackenzie Ryan was there to make the defensive save. With 9:13 to play in the half, Gingrich put in a rebound, to cut the deficit to one. However, with just over five minutes to go, Peterson assisted, Julianne Marchand, to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Halfway through the second half, Peterson picked up her third assist of the night, as Caroline Marchand killed off the game, making it 4-1. Caroline would score again, two minutes later completing her hat trick.
Newfound was merely brilliant on the night, their pace going forward is definitely on the same level as St. Paul's and Hanover, and the Marchand sisters were just a joy to watch. Even though the Marchand sisters were hogging Newfound's spotlight, D3's top freshman, Jasmine Peterson, had a great night, picking up three assists, putting her into first place in the state.
Newfound will play Mascoma, Sunday afternoon, as they try to complete a perfect season.
And just a quick mention, what a year it's been so far for the freshmen class. Kate Blaisdell of Windham currently leads the state in goals, with 26, and points, with 57, and Jasmine Peterson leads the state in assists, with 20.
- Mascoma v. Newfound - Prediction: Newfound. Even though Mascoma winning the tournament would be amazing to see. Newfound is just too strong. The pace they have going forward should overrun Mascoma, but if Newfound doesn't take them seriously, Mascoma's story may never hit midnight.
- Hanover v. Windham - Prediction: Windham. This will probably be the closest game out of the three. Hanover has the pace that no one else has, but Windham has the firepower that no one else has. If Windham can keep possession, and limit the runs of Diana Schwarz, and the passing of Hannah Curtis, they should be able to wear down Hanover 's defense, but that will not be easy.
- Londonderry v. Timberlane - Prediction: Timberlane. Timberlane's midfield presence with Tori Rothwell and Taryn MacKinnon should win them the game. Player for player Timberlane is better, but so was Pinkerton, and look what happened. However, we do not think Londonderry can play like that twice in a row.
