Nine minutes into the match, Maggie Cissell scored her third goal of the season, to take a 1-0 lead, thanks to Lindsey Stagg. Four minutes later, the Hunkins sisters connected on a counter attack, to tie the game at one. Derryfield had multiple chances to kill off the game in the first half, including ten corners, but couldn't find the back of the net, as it went into halftime, 1-1.
As the second half progressed, Derryfield continued to dominate the game, having nine corners to Portsmouth's zero, but Portsmouth's Kayleigh Vogel stayed strong, not allowing Derryfield to score. With less than 20 seconds to play, superstar Lindsey Stagg got clutch and showed up when she needed to. Stagg picked up a loose ball, about 40-yards out from goal, and darted down the sideline, getting into the circle and earning a corner. With no time left on the clock, Stagg fired a shot that Charlotte Rohlfs deflected home, to help Derryfield escape Portsmouth, 2-1.
Derryfield dominated the game, out corning Portsmouth 19-0. Even though Derryfield can dominate the possession game, they need to start capitalizing on their opportunities, because if they do not that will eventually come back to haunt them. They have one of the toughest schedules to close out their season, playing Kennett, Hanover twice, going to Plymouth (who just knocked off Lebanon & Hanover), and finishing their regular season against top-ranked Windham. Even with how good Stagg is, and as she sits at the #2 spot for goals this season, if they do not start scoring more, their 7-0-1 record could quickly change, and there's a real chance they could lose five of their last six games.
